Laws of Simplicity

Laws of Simplicity

The Laws of Simplicity, by John Maeda, is a book about the importance of simplicity in design. The book stresses simplicity and to expand on that idea more, focusing on a similar hangline creating areas of both filled and white space. This project reinforced the benefit of grid and heirarchy systems in book design.

Object Study

Object Study

Images and words mean different things to different people. Cultural biases and other environmental changes shape people’s experiences. The potato ricer. A utensil I would watch my grandmother use in the kitchen, a symbol of love, used through making food. Exploring its details and material, photographing specific angles to create question in the subject. This project highlighted the importance of preparation and diversity in photographs.

Surrealist Card Game

Surrealist Card Game

Based on the archetype of “hero” or “villain”, a character was picked to research and explore deeply. An appropriate character seen as the “villain” would be a pair, and that would be Bonnie and Clyde. Inspiration was drawn from the juxtaposition of the similarities and differences of both Bonnie and Clyde. Two different individuals that grew up differently and come together and find a similar fate. Bonnie had this emotional hunger and crave for love, while Clyde offered that in toxic ways. This project pressed the importance of continuity in a system and visual metaphors in communication.

The Exploded Design Canon

The Exploded Design Canon

Art and design is not created in a vacuum. All art and design is a by product of culture, Communication Design is no different and is informed by ideas of public taste (aesthetics), technological shifts (innovation), and function (needs of a community). Research, outline, write, design, and produce a piece of design using print, motion, and/or interaction/experience to educate the class about a designer of choice. This project stressed the importance of research and logic behind design.

The Gift: Stop Motion Short Film

The Gift: Stop Motion Short Film

An introduction and exploration on stop motion filming and preparation. The goal was to create a 60 second stop motion film while creating a sense of time through motion, sound and post editing. Using no dialogue and minimal specific background noises to emphasize the movement of the subject. This project introduced a new form of patience, focusing on details that come so naturally and deliver that in every shot.

My Closet: EXTRA-ORDINARY: A Title Sequence Of Your Life

My Closet: EXTRA-ORDINARY: A Title Sequence Of Your Life

Life is full of mundane moments, activities and experiences. While we are conscious of what we do we often accomplish them with little or no thought. Utilize the structure of a film title sequence to reveal the fantastical potential of a particularly unfantastical moment. This project stressed the importance of sequence and a clear flowing story.
