Lucy in Narnia

Lucy in Narnia

This is the moment when Lucy Pevensie goes through the wardrobe for the first time in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. This 11x17 inch piece is made primarily of plasticine, with glow in the dark powder, glitter, and wire on illustration board.

Iorek Byrnison

Iorek Byrnison

This mixed media project shows Lyra and Iorek from the classic fantasy series His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I created this piece using ink, glitter, and screentones and added color and texture digitally.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is a short story about a Confederate slave owner who tries to sabotage a Union bridge and is hung. Most of this short story is a hallucination where the man imagines the noose has broken and he is able to escape. However there is a sense of panic and anxiety throughout the whole story that causes the reader to feel uncomfortable even before they're told what's actually happening. I created this layered paper illustration trying to express that feeling of anxiety by showing the main character split into three versions of himself as he disassociates from his execution. Even though he believes himself to be escaping and is frantically noticing heightened beauty of the world around him, he's also tugging at the noose around his neck. This illustration was made using card stock, acrylic paint, gouache, glitter, crayon, brayer, Saran Wrap, and foam core.

The Woman in White

The Woman in White

This book cover for The Woman in White, a classic mystery from 1860 written by Wilkie Collins, is inspired by the prevalence of letters in the novel. The cover itself is styled after an envelope. Letters are responsible for many of the key plot points and also allow the women in the novel to look after each other and support each other despite the oppressive rules of their society. One of the key themes is that of the main character's "double" who sends her a letter and this a moment that I wanted to show on the cover. One of these women is about to be trapped by a marriage, by a plot to get her fortune, by a remote home, and the other is free, both physically from an asylum where she has been imprisoned and metaphorically, since she is terminally ill and no longer has to worry about consequences. There are also pet birds in the novel kept by the main villain, and I chose to combine the fates of the women and the more obvious symbol of animals in cages on the inner flaps. I was inspired by linocut for this digital illustration and I added scanned textures made with a brayer and different brushes in the dark areas.

Beware the Red Dragon

Beware the Red Dragon

This project was created as an introduction to a class on Mixed Media techniques. I made it from Play Doh since I didn't yet know that plasticine would be easier to manipulate. I was inspired by an image of a castle we were given as reference and invented an illustration of a dragon that comes to steal sheep from the kingdom at night. I created a digital version with color that acted as an underpainting and then added Play Doh to the paper. I learned a lot creating this illustration and it inspired me to start creating more three dimensional pieces.
