Creating Space

Creating Space

Expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2040 (Morgan Stanley and Citi Group, 2024), the growth of the space economy will tremendously improve the quality of life on Earth. However, the Western Generation Z population tends to misappropriate space with the ambitions of billionaires rather than seeing it as an essential resource for the future (Inmarsat, 2022). This color and pattern strategy proposes the adoption of culturally relevant themes as a way to democratize the space economy and ensure inclusivity. Through extensive research and material exploration, the thesis aims to address the following: how does the value of the space economy change when expressed through a culture-forward strategic approach?

Detroit Visitor Center

Detroit Visitor Center

The "Detroit Visitor Center" is a collaborative CMF and interior design project to create a commercial space that explores the future of materiality post-COVID-19. The key sustainable materials actively reduce the spread of bacteria and blend natural and futuristic elements. The glass is treated with 3M's signature window film to regulate UV exposure while inviting openness into a space flush with colors inspired by city statues to foster community for visitors and residents.
